‘Hard Truths’ Features Marianne Jean-Baptiste in a Fiercely Honest Family Drama [TRAILER]

Hard-Truths trailer

In the newly released trailer for Mike Leigh’s upcoming film Hard Truths, Oscar-nominated actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste delivers a blistering performance as Pansy, a woman whose life is defined by anger and emotional turmoil. “People, can’t stand ’em,” Pansy declares in her opening line, setting the tone for a story that explores the complexities of family and the harsh realities that shape our lives.

The narrative follows Pansy, a neurotic and deeply troubled wife and mother, as she navigates her strained relationship with her younger sister, played by Michele Austin (Another Year). In stark contrast to Pansy, her sister exudes warmth and resilience, finding joy in her role as a single mother and community figure.

The film’s trailer teases a raw and honest portrayal of sibling dynamics, with Michele Austin’s character questioning Pansy’s constant anger and inability to find joy. Leigh’s signature blend of dark humor and poignant drama is evident as Pansy’s journey toward reconciliation with her sister unfolds.

The cast is rounded out by David Webber as Curtley, Tuwaine Barrett as Moses, Ani Nelson as Kayla, Sophia Brown as Aleisha, Jonathan Livingstone, and Samantha Spiro.

Behibd the scenes feature Leigh regulars including producer Georgina Lowe, cinematographer Dick Pope, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, and composer Gary Yershon.

Following its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Hard Truths is set for a limited release on December 6 to qualify for awards season, followed by a nationwide release on January 10 by Bleecker Street in the U.S. Studiocanal will handle the UK release, while Cornerstone Films oversees international sales. The film is co-financed by Film4 and produced by Thin Man Films and The Mediapro Studio in association with Creativity Media.

Hard Truths marks a significant reunion for Leigh, who last directed Jean-Baptiste in their critically acclaimed 1996 film Secrets & Lies, which earned Jean-Baptiste an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The film also represents Leigh’s return to contemporary storytelling, a departure from his recent period pieces like Mr. Turner and Peterloo.

Leigh’s latest venture promises to be a compelling exploration of family bonds, where even amid lifetimes of hurt and unresolved grievances, the possibility of connection and forgiveness remains. With Hard Truths, Leigh returns to the nuanced, character-driven storytelling that has made him one of Britain’s most revered filmmakers.
