Hulu Sets March Premiere for ‘Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told’ Documentary [TEASER]

Hulu has officially revealed the release dates for its upcoming documentary “Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told.” After its premiere at SXSW on March 12th, the documentary is set to debut on Hulu in the U.S. on March 21, as well as on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in Select Territories.

Directed by P. Frank Williams, the documentary delves into the vibrant era of Freaknik, the iconic Atlanta street party that gained prominence in the ’80s and ’90s. Originally a Black college cookout, Freaknik evolved into a notorious event known for its wild tales of highway hookups and legendary late-night parties, ultimately leading to its decline. At its peak, Freaknik became a city-shutting phenomenon, now revered as a cult classic.

Featuring insights from prominent figures such as 21 Savage, Too $hort, Jermaine Dupri, Killer Mike, Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, Ceelo Green, Jalen Rose, Kenny Burns, Lil Jon, Legendary Jerry, Sharon Toomer, Emma Horton, Monique Tolliver, Amadi Boon, and Stacy Lloyd, the documentary offers a comprehensive exploration of this iconic cultural moment.

The executive producers behind the project include Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, Jermaine Dupri, 21 Savage, Terry “TR” Ross, Melissa Cooper, Alex Avant, Tresa Sanders, Geraldine L. Porras, P. Frank Williams, Eric Tomosunas, and Peter Bittenbender. Producers Jay Allen and Nikki Byles contribute to the masterful crafting of the documentary by Mass Appeal & Swirl Films.

“Freaknik” is just one of Hulu’s upcoming releases. The limited series “Under the Bridge,” comprising eight episodes, is based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book, narrating the true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk, who disappeared after attending a party in 1997. Starring Lily Gladstone, Archie Panjabi, and Riley Keough, the series is scheduled to premiere on April 17.

Additionally, “The Contestant,” a documentary recounting the true story of Japanese reality TV star Tomoaki Hamatsu, nicknamed Nasubi, premieres on May 2. The documentary follows Nasubi’s experience of being left naked in a room for over a year, tasked with filling out magazine sweepstakes to earn food and clothing. Clair Titley directs the documentary, produced by Megumi Inman, Andee Ryder, and Ian BonhôteDenpa Shonen, with original music by Nainita Desai.
