Hulu is locking down a Prison Break remake.
Hulu is remaking a new iteration of the popular Fox series. And while it is still in its early stages, the streamer promises a fresh approach to the show.
The “Prison Break” remake will be headed by Mayan MC showrunner Elgin James. However, this revival won’t follow the central characters of the original show, portrayed by Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell. Instead, it will be set within the same universe.
Little details have been shared but it will focus on exploring the world of “Prison Break” rather than reuniting the original characters. A decision influenced by Wentworth Miller’s previous announcement that he was officially done with the franchise. Miller, who portrayed Michael Scofield, revealed his decision three years ago, expressing a desire, as a gay man, not to play straight characters anymore. His announcement was met with support from co-stars like Dominic Purcell and Sarah Wayne Callies.

James is not only penning the script but also taking on the role of executive producer. He will work with Dawn Olmstead, Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz, who are all apart of the original iteration. Paul Scheuring, the creator of “Prison Break,” will bring his creative vision to this new venture as well. Notably, the project is under the banner of 20th Television, which was responsible for producing the original series and is currently home to Elgin James through an overall deal.
For those who may not be familiar with the original series, “Prison Break” first graced the screens in 2005 on Fox. It revolved around Michael Scofield, portrayed by Wentworth Miller, a structural engineer who commits armed robbery to get incarcerated in the same prison where his wrongly accused brother, Lincoln Burrows, played by Dominic Purcell, is confined. Michael devises an elaborate escape plan to free Lincoln, drawing in several other inmates along the way.
Other notable cast members included Amaury Nolasco, Sarah Wayne Callies, Paul Adelstein, Rockmond Dunbar, Inbar Lavi, Mark Feuerstein, Robert Knepper and Augustus Prew.
The series aired on Fox for four seasons followed by a made-for-TV film titled The Final Break which aired 12 days after the Season 4 finale in 2009 to wrap things up. A 2015 Prison Break sequel limited series starring Miller and Purcell, also on Fox, served as a fifth season. It later returned as a limited series in 2017 and that limited series did bring back its core cast.
