The collection brings together Singleton’s seminal trio—Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice, and Baby Boy—in what many consider a deeply personal and culturally defining body of work centered on life in South Central Los Angeles.

Originally kicking off with Boyz n the Hood in 1991, Singleton’s debut didn’t just introduce a filmmaker, it shifted the landscape. At just 24 years old, he became the youngest-ever nominee for Best Director at the Oscars, setting the tone for a career rooted in telling grounded, unapologetic stories about Black life.

Over the next decade, Singleton expanded that vision with Poetic Justice and Baby Boy, crafting a loose trilogy that explores love, grief, masculinity, and survival, all through an intimate, human lens.

Now, that legacy is being preserved with a four-disc Criterion set featuring newly restored 4K transfers with Dolby Vision HDR. The release also includes a slate of special features designed to deepen the context of Singleton’s work, including audio commentaries from the late filmmaker, a new documentary on his creative process, and a conversation between Ryan Coogler and Regina King reflecting on his lasting influence.

The trilogy’s impact is also reflected in its powerhouse casts. Across the three films, audiences saw unforgettable performances from talents like Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Angela Bassett, Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur, and Taraji P. Henson—many of whom helped define an era of Black storytelling on screen.

The Criterion Collection release includes:

  • New 4K restorations of all three films
  • Dolby Vision HDR presentation
  • Audio commentaries featuring Singleton
  • A new documentary on his filmmaking process
  • Archival interviews, deleted scenes, and music videos
  • A critical essay by Julian Kimble

Available now, the box set is priced starting around $87.49 for the 4K edition, with options across platforms like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Criterion’s official site.

More than three decades after Boyz n the Hood first hit theaters, Singleton’s work continues to resonate—not just as films, but as cultural time capsules that captured the nuances of Black life with honesty, care, and urgency.

With this release, the Hood Trilogy isn’t just being revisited—it’s being cemented as essential cinema for generations to come.
