Alison McDonald to Adapt ‘Windy City’ Sports Romance Book Series for Amazon MGM Studios

Amazon MGM Studios is heading into the sports romance space in a major way.

The studio has secured the rights to Windy City series, a bestselling five-book sports romance franchise from author Liz Tomforde, with plans to develop it into a television series.

At the center of the adaptation is Emmy-nominated writer Alison McDonald, who will write and executive produce the project. The series is being produced under Premeditated Productions’ first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

The Windy City universe begins with Mile High and follows a group of interconnected professional athletes in Chicago—each book focusing on a different couple as they navigate love, ambition, and the complications that come with high-profile sports careers.

The books span hockey, basketball, and baseball storylines, building a shared world of romance, rivalry, and emotional stakes that has helped the series sell millions of copies worldwide and generate over a billion Kindle page reads.

Since launching in 2022, Tomforde’s series has expanded into multiple languages and global markets, building a strong built-in audience ahead of its screen adaptation.

Tomforde said in a statement that the journey from page to screen feels surreal, noting that the series began as a personal passion project while she was working as a flight attendant for a professional hockey team.

McDonald brings an extensive television background to the adaptation, with credits including Russian Doll, Your Honor, Nurse Jackie, and the acclaimed remake of Roots. She has also worked across animation and original specials, including Amazon’s American Girl Story and Netflix’s Karma’s World.

Premeditated Productions—run by Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark—is producing the series as part of its expanding slate at Amazon MGM, which also includes adaptations like Fourth Wing and Stormbreaker.

For Amazon MGM Studios, the move continues a broader strategy of building out high-demand literary IP for global television audiences, especially in genres where romance and sports intersect with serialized storytelling.

No release date has been announced yet, but the project is officially in development as the studio continues expanding its slate of book-to-screen adaptations.
