Amazon MGM Studios is officially headed back to Ludicrous Speed.
Keke Palmer has joined the cast of the untitled Spaceballs sequel, which is set to hit theaters in 2027. She joins a stacked lineup that includes original cast members Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman, with comedy legend Mel Brooks returning to reprise his role as Yogurt.
The new film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) and is written by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez — the same team behind Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and Addams Family 2. Gad is also expected to appear in the film and will produce alongside Brooks, Greenbaum, and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody.
Amazon MGM has kept plot and character details tightly under wraps, but in true Mel Brooks fashion, the sequel has been cheekily described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” In short: it’s exactly the kind of chaos Spaceballs fans would expect.
Keke in the Galaxy
Palmer’s addition brings major star power and comedic range to the cast. She’s coming off the success of One of Them Days, her buddy comedy with SZA, which already has a sequel in development. Up next, Palmer stars opposite Eddie Murphy in Amazon’s The Pickup (August 6), and appears in Good Fortune (October 17) and Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters.
Her role in Spaceballs marks her entry into one of the most iconic parody universes of all time — one that has been teasing a return for years.
The OGs Are Back
Moranis is stepping back into the black helmet as Dark Helmet, marking a rare on-screen return since stepping away from acting in the late ’90s. Pullman is also back as the rogue hero Lone Starr, and Brooks will once again channel Yogurt, the self-aware, merchandising-obsessed alien mentor.
The original Spaceballs, released in 1987, spoofed Star Wars, Star Trek, and other genre staples. While it made a modest $38 million at the box office, the film became a cult classic over time, largely due to its absurd humor, sharp satire, and unforgettable one-liners.
Brooks, an EGOT winner and one of comedy’s most celebrated filmmakers, continues to make appearances in front of and behind the camera. In 2024, he received an Honorary Oscar, and most recently served as narrator and co-writer on Hulu’s History of the World, Part II.
What to Expect
No word yet on whether characters like Barf (originally played by John Candy) or Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) will appear, but the film’s creative team has teased a blend of old and new that stays true to Brooks’ brand of irreverent humor while expanding the galaxy for a new generation.
Production is underway, with Amazon MGM making a bigger push into theatrical releases. An exact release date will be announced in the future.
