Kevin Hart has a new project in the works at Netflix.
Hart is set to star in an untitled action comedy directed by McG, the filmmaker behind the Charlie’s Angels films from the early 2000s. The two are pairing up for a concept that blends espionage with the chaos of new parenthood.
The film follows two rival spies who cross paths in a Lamaze class after their wives become close friends. As their secret lives begin to collide, the two men are forced to reluctantly work together while navigating the road to fatherhood. The script is based on a short story by Sean Lewis.
The writing team behind the script is Adam and Aaron Nee, who wrote the Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum romantic action comedy The Lost City and are also attached to the upcoming Masters of the Universe. They are joined by Jonathan Tropper, who has a history with Levy, having worked on both This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project.
On the producing side, Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds are both attached through their respective banners, 21 Laps and Maximum Effort. Levy’s 21 Laps is also the production company behind Netflix’s Stranger Things. The two producers have built a consistent working relationship through projects like Deadpool & Wolverine, Free Guy, and The Adam Project, though here they are stepping back from the creative side to serve strictly as producers. Hart is also producing through his company Hartbeat, alongside the company’s Luke Kelly-Clyne and Bryan Smiley.
For McG, this project is a return to the genre that launched his feature film career. He got his start directing the Charlie’s Angels films in the early 2000s and has also helmed Terminator: Salvation, We Are Marshall, and the spy action comedy This Means War, which starred Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, and Reese Witherspoon. His last five films have all been for Netflix, where he has worked across genres including horror comedy with The Babysitter and its sequel, YA sci-fi with Rim of the World and The Uglies, and the family comedy Family Switch, starring Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms. McG is currently in post-production on Warrior Kid, starring Chris Pratt for Apple.
Hart also has deep ties to Netflix. He is the subject of The Roast of Kevin Hart, debuting May 10, and hosts the comedy competition series Funny AF with the streamer. He also stars in the comedy 72 Hours, directed by Tim Story, which premieres July 24.
No release date for the untitled spy comedy has been announced.
