Netflix and Sony have announced a series adaptation of the 2021 film ‘Fatherhood,’ in which Kevin Hart portrayed a single father raising his daughter after his wife’s unexpected death. Paul Weitz, who directed the film, will write and direct the series.
The series will be a co-production between Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions and Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions. Key producers from the film, including David Beaubaire’s Sunset Lane Media, Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, and Andrew Miano from Depth of Field, will return as executive producers. Higher Ground’s Vinnie Malhotra and Ada Chiaghana, alongside Hartbeat’s Mike Stein and Tiffany Brown, will oversee the series. Kevin Hart is expected to serve as an executive producer, but a new actor will likely take on the lead role.

‘Fatherhood’ is based on Matthew Logelin’s 2011 memoir ‘Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love.’ The film depicts Matt Logelin (Kevin Hart) navigating the challenges of single parenthood after his wife Liz dies suddenly after childbirth. Initially slated for a theatrical release by Sony Pictures, the film premiered on Netflix on June 18, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film was well-received, particularly for Kevin Hart’s performance, which showcased his range beyond comedy. ‘Fatherhood’ quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched items, with projections of 61 million households viewing it in the first month.
With the series now fast-tracked for production, fans can look forward to a deeper exploration of single parenthood and family dynamics. The collaboration between Hartbeat and Higher Ground, along with Weitz’s continued involvement, sets the stage for a compelling continuation of ‘Fatherhood’s’ heartfelt story.
