LaKeith Stanfield Joins Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat in Neon’s ‘The Wrong Girls’

LaKeith Stanfield is the latest name to join the cast of The Wrong Girls, an upcoming indie film from Neon that marks the directorial debut of Dylan Meyer. The film, which is currently in production in Los Angeles, is one of the first independent projects to kick off filming after the recent industry standstill caused by devastating wildfires.

Stanfield, known for his standout performances in Judas and the Black Messiah, Atlanta, and The Book of Clarence, joins a cast led by Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding) and Alia Shawkat (Blink Twice). The ensemble also includes Seth Rogen—who is producing through Point Grey—alongside Kumail Nanjiani, Zack Fox, and Tony Hale.

Written and directed by Meyer, The Wrong Girls follows Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat), two best friends deeply entrenched in their codependent routines, navigating life paycheck to paycheck and bong rip to bong rip. However, a case of mistaken identity sends their world into chaos. Neon will handle the U.S. theatrical release and international rights.

The film is being produced by Maggie McLean, Stewart, and Meyer under Nevermind Pictures, with Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Alex McAtee, and James Weaver producing for Point Grey. Allison Carter and Jon Read are producing under Savage Rose Productions as part of their partnership with Neon. Neon’s Jason Wald, Claire Timmons, and Kate Gondwe are overseeing the project.

For Stanfield, The Wrong Girls adds to an already impressive slate of upcoming projects. He recently led Jeymes Samuel’s The Book of Clarence and will be seen in Apple TV+’s adaptation of The Changeling. His ability to seamlessly move between comedy, drama, and genre films makes him a compelling addition to the cast, adding another layer of intrigue to the film.

This marks Neon’s third collaboration with Stewart following Spencer—which earned her an Oscar nomination—and Crimes of the Future. Meanwhile, Shawkat has been making waves with recent appearances in Blink Twice and Severance season two. As for Meyer, she previously produced Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water and co-wrote Moxie, the Amy Poehler-directed dramedy.

With production underway and an all-star lineup, The Wrong Girls is shaping up to be a must-watch. Stay tuned for more updates as the film progresses.
