Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Piano Lesson) is set to star alongside Steve Carell, Charly Clive, and Ted Lasso alum Phil Dunster in HBO’s upcoming untitled comedy from Bill Lawrence, Matt Tarses, and Warner Bros. Television.
The half-hour single-camera series, which has received a 10-episode order, is set on a college campus and follows an author (Carell) as he navigates a complex relationship with his daughter (Clive). Deadwyler will portray the head of the English Department at the liberal arts college—an accomplished poet and published writer who shares an immediate connection with Carell’s character.
Lawrence and Tarses co-wrote the pilot, with Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer executive producing under Doozer Productions, alongside Tarses and Carell. The series is produced by Doozer in association with Warner Bros. Television, where both Lawrence’s Doozer banner and Tarses are under overall deals.
Originally picked up in may, the series marks a major television role for Deadwyler, whose recent standout performances in Till and The Piano Lesson have further cemented her reputation as a powerhouse talent.
Clive, known for co-creating the Britney stage show and BBC Three pilot based on her experience with a brain tumor diagnosis, has built a strong comedic resume with roles in The Lazarus Project and Pure. Meanwhile, Dunster, best known for his turn as Jamie Tartt on Ted Lasso, continues his rise in television with this HBO project.
With a strong ensemble cast and the creative force of Lawrence (Scrubs, Ted Lasso), Tarses (Sports Night, The Goldbergs), and Carell, the series is shaping up to be a highly anticipated addition to HBO’s comedy lineup.
