The Max series Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and its second season, Summer School, expanded the Pretty Little Liars universe by introducing a darker, more horror-focused take on the familiar mystery drama. Set in the fictional town of Millwood, this iteration followed a new generation of “Liars” — a group of teen girls forced to confront the sins of their mothers, as well as their own dark secrets.

The series centered around Imogen (Bailee Madison), Tabby (Chandler Kinney), Faran (Zaria), Mouse (Malia Pyles), and Noa (Maia Reficco), who are brought together after a mysterious and deadly figure known as “A” begins tormenting them. The new villain holds the girls responsible for a traumatic event tied to their parents’ past, forcing them to band together to uncover the truth while navigating their own personal traumas and high school struggles.

Unlike its predecessors, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin embraced a more horror-driven style, weaving in slasher elements and frequent nods to classic horror films. Season two, Summer School, picked up where the first season left off, with the girls continuing to face the mysterious threats of “A” while dealing with the aftermath of the first season’s revelations. The show combined the familiar intrigue of the Pretty Little Liars brand with a fresh, modern spin, diving deeper into issues like generational trauma, social justice, and the weight of inherited secrets.

The series also starred Sharon Leal, Mallory Bechtel, Alex Aiono, Jordan Gonzalez, and Elias Kacavas.

In a statement, Max expressed gratitude to co-creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, and the team at Warner Bros. Television for their work in reimagining the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ universe. “While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ we are so grateful to our co-creators for introducing this new generation of liars to fans, who banded together to confront a new creepy villain in Millwood,” the statement read. The platform praised the team’s “unique and modern creative vision,” which brought a horror-filled twist to the beloved franchise while honoring its original ‘Rosewood’ roots.

The series was the fourth installment in the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ TV franchise, all inspired by Sara Shepard’s book series. The original show aired on Freeform for seven seasons, ending in 2017. Two other spin-offs, ‘Ravenswood’ and ‘Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists,’ also followed, but neither lasted beyond a single season.

This version of the Pretty Little Liars franchise not only honored its roots but also sought to explore new territory by incorporating horror themes and socially conscious storytelling, setting it apart from the previous versions while staying true to the mystery and suspense that made the original so popular.

Produced by Muckle Man Productions and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, ‘Pretty Little Liars: Summer School’ aimed to put a fresh twist on the mystery drama while maintaining its dark and thrilling atmosphere. Despite the show’s cancellation, it remains a memorable chapter in the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ saga.
