Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves to Lead Tyler Perry’s New Netflix Feature ‘Doing Life’

Tyler Perry is back behind the camera with a new feature for Netflix — and this one’s got grit, heart, and a whole lot of soul.

Doing Life, Perry’s latest film, will star Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves as the leads in what’s being described as a powerful urban drama with a punch. The film dives into the intertwined lives of a single mother trying to stay afloat and a reformed ex-con whose hidden gifts could be his shot at redemption. Together, they form a bond that neither of them saw coming — but might just save them both.

Joining them in this emotionally charged ensemble are Tamberla Perry (Brilliant Minds), Danielle Moné Truitt (Law & Order: Organized Crime), Karen Obilom (Doom Patrol), and Jasmine Sargent (Dynasty).

Produced by Perry alongside longtime collaborators Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland, Doing Life marks the seventh project under Perry’s creative partnership with Netflix — a deal that’s been steadily turning out everything from drama-heavy epics to fan-favorite comedies and faith-based stories.

This isn’t Reeves’ first time teaming up with Perry, either. The two previously worked together on The Six Triple Eight, Perry’s historical war drama led by Kerry Washington, which told the incredible real-life story of the all-Black, all-female 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. Reeves portrayed Private Hugh Bell in that film, and based on Netflix’s report, the film quickly became Perry’s most viewed title in its first four weeks on the platform. It also boosted the performance of Perry’s other Netflix films by a solid 45% — clearly, the audience is showing up and staying tapped in.

Doing Life joins a growing slate of Perry titles at Netflix, including Madea’s Destination Wedding — his follow-up to A Madea Homecoming — as well as the upcoming drama Straw starring Taraji P. Henson, and R&B, co-written by Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar) and Cory Tynan.

And let’s not forget Perry’s latest TV ventures. He’s behind She the People, a drama following Lieutenant Governor hopeful Antoinette Dunkerson (played by Terri J. Vaughn) as she tries to balance a chaotic political career with an even more chaotic family. His freshman series Beauty in Black was also recently renewed for a second season.
