‘One of Them Days’ Sequel in the Works with Keke Palmer and SZA Expected to Return

'One of Them Days' REVIEW

Looks like we’re getting another “One of Them Days.”

Following its box office breakout, TriStar Pictures is officially developing a sequel to the hit buddy comedy starring Keke Palmer and SZA. Both stars are expected to reprise their roles, alongside returning director Lawrence Lamont and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton. The original creative team — including producers Issa Rae and Deniese Davis — is also back on board.

Released in January 2025, One of Them Days was a refreshing throwback to mid-budget theatrical comedies and earned over $50 million globally on a $14 million budget. The film also became a streaming favorite, spending three weeks on Netflix’s Top 10.

A Hit Born from South L.A. Roots

Set in the heart of South Los Angeles, the film follows best friends and roommates Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), who find themselves on a chaotic mission to recover rent money after Alyssa’s trifling boyfriend blows their savings. What follows is a wild, funny, and heartfelt journey filled with unexpected cameos and a lot of soul.

The ensemble cast includes Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, Patrick Cage, Amin Joseph, Gabrielle Dennis, Dewayne Perkins, and DomiNque Perry.

The movie was originally developed as The Jungles, named after the neighborhood where it’s set, and came out of Sony’s CoCre Lab — a partnership between Sony and ColorCreative to uplift emerging diverse screenwriters with original stories. Singleton’s script spent nearly seven years in development before making it to the big screen.

What’s Next?

No plot details yet for the sequel, but with the original team returning and audiences still showing love, expectations are high. Palmer and SZA’s onscreen chemistry — and real-life history, which includes a 2022 SNL episode where Palmer hosted and SZA was the musical guest — helped power the film’s success.

And in case you forgot: this marked SZA’s first major acting role, dropping shortly after the release of her Grammy-nominated album Saturn. Meanwhile, Palmer continues to stay booked and busy with upcoming roles in The Pickup (opposite Eddie Murphy) and Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune.

Stay tuned — it’s looking like we’re in for another one of those days, and we’re not mad at it.
