Ryan Coogler Teams Up with Universal Pictures for Prince-Inspired Jukebox Musical

Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media has joined forces with Universal Pictures for an untitled project inspired by the music of the late legend, Prince, confirms Deadline. The film, a jukebox musical, will see Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian taking on production roles, with Rebecca Cho serving as an executive producer under Proximity Media. Additionally, Atom Factory’s Troy Carter and Universal Music Publishing Group’s Jody Gerson will be part of the producing team.

Bryan Edward Hill, known for his work on the Titans TV series, penned a previous draft of the script. Proximity Media, a multimedia company founded by the Cooglers and Ohanian, aims to create immersive entertainment experiences across various platforms. Their portfolio includes acclaimed projects such as Judas and the Black Messiah and Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Currently, Proximity Media is gearing up for the production of Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated event film at Warner Bros., starring Michael B. Jordan, slated for a March 2025 IMAX release. In addition to their film endeavors, they have also ventured into documentary filmmaking, including titles like Homeroom and Stephen Curry: Underrated.

Ryan Coogler’s involvement in the Prince project was initially reported by The InSneider. This Prince-inspired project adds to a growing list of endeavors dedicated to the music icon, including a stage adaptation of Purple Rain and a biopic based on Prince’s first wife, Mayte Garcia’s memoir, “The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince,” developed by Crazy Legs Features.
