After becoming one of the biggest original horror hits in recent memory, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is heading to Max. The vampire thriller will begin streaming Friday, July 4, and will debut on HBO’s linear channel Saturday, July 5.
Led by Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, Sinners also stars Hailee Steinfeld as Mary, along with a standout ensemble including Jayme Lawson, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Omar Miller, Li Jun Li, Jack O’Connell, and Christian Robinson.
The story centers on twin brothers who return to their small hometown in search of peace—but quickly discover a haunting threat far more dangerous than the lives they left behind.
Since its theatrical release in April, Sinners has shattered expectations and become a major force at the box office. The film grossed over $361 million globally, including $276 million in the U.S. alone—making it one of the highest-grossing original films since 2010 and the third 2025 film to pass the $275 million domestic mark.
While the film’s supernatural premise thrilled audiences, it was Coogler’s emotional foundation that resonated most deeply. Speaking ahead of the release, Coogler shared that the film was inspired in part by his maternal grandfather.
“Each time I’ve made a film it’s become more and more personal,” said Coogler. “With this one, I was digging into two relationships—one with my maternal grandfather who I never met. He died about a year before I was born. He was from Merrill, Mississippi and eventually moved to Oakland, married my grandmother, and built a house our whole family was based out of in Oakland.”
That personal legacy bleeds through in Sinners, combining the bloodlust of genre storytelling with rich emotional themes about family, loss, and legacy.
The film is written and directed by Ryan Coogler, and produced by Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Coogler himself. Ludwig Göransson, Will Greenfield, and Rebecca Cho serve as executive producers.
With its July streaming debut perfectly timed for the holiday weekend, Sinners is poised to find a whole new wave of viewers—and reignite the cultural conversation around one of the year’s most talked-about films.
