The World of ‘S.W.A.T.’ Lives On in New Spinoff Series ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’

Just when it looked like the S.W.A.T. team had clocked out for good, Sony Pictures Television is pulling them back in—well, at least one of them.

And fan favorite Shemar Moore is continuing his legacy in the franchise, stepping back into action as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson in S.W.A.T. Exiles. After eight seasons leading the charge, Moore returns to the role that’s become a cornerstone of his career—and he’s not coming quietly.

Sony has officially announced S.W.A.T. Exiles, a fresh spinoff that puts a new twist on the tactical drama. Production is set to begin this summer in Los Angeles, keeping the world of S.W.A.T. alive and 200 of the original crew members employed in the process.

The new 10-episode series picks up with Hondo after a high-profile mission goes sideways. Pulled out of forced retirement, he’s tasked with leading an experimental S.W.A.T. unit made up of unpredictable, untested young recruits. The challenge? Bridging a generational divide, turning outsiders into a team, and saving the very program that shaped him.

Jason Ning (The Brothers Sun, Lucifer) will serve as showrunner and executive producer under his overall deal with Sony. Ning will be joined by executive producers Moore, Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, and James Scura.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Sony to bring S.W.A.T. Exiles to life,” Ning shared. “It’s an incredible honor to carry forward the legacy of a show that fans around the world have come to love. Working with Shemar Moore, who defines what it means to be a leading man, and introducing a new generation of characters into this world is a dream.”

Sony is taking S.W.A.T. Exiles to market independently, planning to shop the series to networks and streamers globally. Whether it lands on a familiar home like CBS or finds new ground with a platform like Netflix—where previous seasons of S.W.A.T. currently stream—the goal is to meet the franchise’s loyal fanbase where they are and bring new viewers into the fold.

The announcement comes just two days after S.W.A.T. aired its series finale on May 16. And while CBS has canceled the show—three times, no less—Sony isn’t letting go that easily.

“My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable,” Moore said in a statement. “We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony. Katherine Pope, Neal H. Moritz, Jason Ning, and I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive.”

Sony Pictures TV Studios President Katherine Pope added, “We couldn’t be more excited to bring the next chapter of S.W.A.T. to life—both for our incredibly dedicated fans of the original franchise and for a new generation of viewers. This team’s commitment to the global fanbase, to our beloved crew, and to our city runs deep.”

Whether you’ve been riding with Hondo from day one or are just now getting in on the action, S.W.A.T. Exiles is shaping up to deliver the same high-stakes intensity, emotional grit, and grounded storytelling that’s made the franchise a global hit. No word yet on additional cast, but if one thing’s clear—it’s that Hondo’s not done yet.
