‘Swapped’ Hits 38.7 Million Views in Seven Days, Sets New Netflix Animation Record

Netflix has another streaming giant on its hands.

The animated feature ‘Swapped’ has officially become the most-watched animated film in a single week in Netflix history, pulling in 38.7 million views during the May 4–10 viewing window, according to Tudum. The surge marks a major leap from its debut performance of 15.5 million views in its first three days.

The film, which is led by Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple, continues its dominant run on Netflix, securing the No. 1 spot on the streamer’s English-language film chart.

A new benchmark for Netflix animation

With its 38.7 million-view week, ‘Swapped’ officially surpasses previous animated contenders on the platform, including ‘The Sea Beast’ (34.9 million in a single week) and ‘Leo’ (34.6 million in its debut week). Even long-tail performers like ‘KPop: Demon Hunters’—which eventually became a breakout hit—never reached this level within a seven-day frame.

The performance also highlights a growing trend for Netflix animated originals building momentum after release rather than peaking on day one.

What ‘Swapped’ is about

Directed by Nathan Greno, ‘Swapped’ centers on two rival species—a small woodland creature named Ollie (voiced by Michael B. Jordan) and a bird named Ivy (voiced by Juno Temple)—who accidentally switch bodies after a magical encounter.

Forced to live each other’s realities, the duo must navigate survival, identity, and interspecies conflict while trying to reverse the transformation. Along the way, the film leans into themes of empathy, perspective-shifting, and unlikely alliance.

A stacked voice cast and broad appeal

Beyond its lead duo, the film features a strong supporting voice cast including Tracy Morgan, Cedric the Entertainer, Justina Machado, Ambika Mod, and Lolly Adefope, adding comedic and emotional depth to the animated world.

The ensemble, paired with its family-friendly adventure framing, has helped position ‘Swapped’ as both a kids’ hit and a crossover audience win—fueling its sustained streaming momentum.

Netflix’s animation push is paying off

The record-breaking performance reinforces Netflix’s continued investment in original animation as a major pillar of its film strategy. While some titles see sharp drop-offs after launch, ‘Swapped’ is showing the opposite pattern: growth in its second week and strong word-of-mouth traction across demographics.

For Netflix, it’s another data point that animated storytelling—when paired with recognizable talent and a high-concept hook—can still drive massive global engagement long after premiere weekend.
