Michael Ealy is heading to the frontier.
The actor has joined the cast of MGM+’s upcoming eight-episode drama series ‘The Magnificent Seven’, a reimagining of the classic Western property from ‘Heroes’ creator Tim Kring.
Ealy will play Vin Tanner — a role originally portrayed by Steve McQueen in the 1960 film, and later reimagined as Joshua Faraday, played by Chris Pratt in Antoine Fuqua’s 2016 remake.
Vin is described as understated, sharp-eyed, and quietly observant. A former Pullman Porter in his early adulthood, he once found unexpected freedom after being pulled into a train robbery by the very gang that held him up. That brief stretch of belonging gave him a sense of found family — one that ultimately didn’t last. Now, he drifts through life with dry wit and heightened awareness, reading people and terrain with precision, while quietly wrestling with a desire to believe in something principled.
Ealy joins previously announced cast members Matt Dillon, who stars as Chris Adams — the leader of the seven gunslingers — and Will Patton, who plays Cyrus T. Clemons, a new antagonist to the franchise.
Set in the 1880s American frontier, the series follows seven flawed mercenaries hired to protect a peaceful Quaker community after it is devastated by violence tied to a ruthless land baron. As the group prepares for an inevitable clash, the story digs into their backstories while exploring themes of morality, violence, faith, redemption, and survival.
A legacy stretching back decades
The series is the latest entry in a franchise with deep cinematic roots.
‘The Magnificent Seven’ originally debuted in 1960 as a Western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s landmark 1954 Japanese film ‘Seven Samurai’. The American version starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, and Eli Wallach, and became a defining ensemble Western of its era — known for its iconic score and archetypal “guns-for-hire” narrative.
The story was later revisited in Antoine Fuqua’s 2016 remake, which starred Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D’Onofrio, updating the classic tale for a modern audience while retaining its core premise of reluctant heroes defending a vulnerable town.
This new MGM+ iteration continues that legacy, reimagining the premise once again through a serialized lens, with a greater focus on character backstories and moral complexity.
The series is written and executive produced by Kring, alongside Donald De Line, Lawrence Mirisch, Bruce Kaufman, and Dillon. MGM+ Studios and MGM Television Studios are producing, with production set to begin in June 2026 in Calgary.
Ealy is also set to portray Malcolm X in the upcoming Amazon limited series ‘The Greatest’, executive produced by Michael B. Jordan and showrunner Ben Watkins. He recently appeared in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ and ‘Reasonable Doubt’.
The series will stream on MGM+ in the U.S. and select international territories including the U.K., Germany, Spain, Brazil, and more.
