Serena Williams and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter are joining forces with TriStar Pictures to bring the story of Ann Lowe, a trailblazing Black fashion designer, to the big screen. The film, titled The Dress, will explore the life and legacy of Lowe, one of America’s most prolific yet often overlooked couturiers, whose designs graced the wardrobes of some of the nation’s most influential families, including the Kennedys, Rockefellers, and Roosevelts.
Ann Lowe, who passed away in 1981, remains one of history’s most influential yet underrecognized designers. Born in Alabama in 1898, she learned the art of dressmaking from her mother and grandmother, both skilled seamstresses. Her talent quickly caught the attention of high society, leading her to create gowns for America’s elite. Lowe is perhaps best known for designing the iconic wedding dress Jacqueline Bouvier wore when she married John F. Kennedy in 1953 — a gown considered one of the most famous bridal dresses in history.
Despite her groundbreaking work, Lowe faced significant racial barriers throughout her career. She became the first Black woman to own a boutique on Madison Avenue in New York City, yet her contributions were often overlooked due to the pervasive racism of the era. The biopic will explore Lowe’s journey through these challenges, highlighting her resilience and dedication to her craft.
The screenplay for The Dress will be penned by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, the writing duo behind A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The film is based on Piper Huguley’s book By Her Own Design, which delves into Lowe’s life and legacy. Williams and Caroline Currier will produce the film under Nine Two Six Productions, which Williams founded in 2023. Fitzerman-Blue and Harpster will also serve as producers under their company, Blue Harp, while Ruth E. Carter will executive produce and design the costumes, bringing her unique expertise to the recreation of Lowe’s exquisite garments.
Ann Lowe’s story is one of quiet brilliance and unrecognized influence, and The Dress seeks to finally place her in the spotlight she so richly deserves. With powerhouse names like Williams and Carter leading the project, Lowe’s pioneering role in the fashion world is set to receive its long-overdue recognition.
