The curtains are set to close on the 2024 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) with a grand finale on Community Day, featuring the encore screening of “The Waterboyz” and the premiere of “Power of Dream.” Held in Historic Overtown at the Black Archives Lyric Theater, this event promises a captivating blend of entertainment and empowerment for attendees from all walks of life.
As the sun sets on this five-day extravaganza, local residents, businesses, and luminaries from the entertainment and sports industries will gather to celebrate Black creativity and resilience. Highlighting the event are the screenings of two impactful films: “The Waterboyz,” a riveting tale of survival and mentorship, and “Power of Dream,” a stirring documentary chronicling the trailblazing journey of women’s basketball players.
“The Waterboyz” follows the journey of Drew (Akili McDowell) as he navigates the bustling streets of ATL, earning a living by selling water. Directed by Coke Daniels, this film delves into themes of perseverance and mentorship, resonating with audiences of all backgrounds.
Following this compelling narrative is the premiere of “Power of Dream,” courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios. Directed and produced by Dawn Porter, this documentary sheds light on the empowering true story of women athletes who defied the odds to make their voices heard on and off the court.
