A family drama about inheritance, grief, and the weight of what we leave behind is making waves on the festival circuit.

The Heir, the directorial debut short film from award-winning producer Tia A. Smith, has released its first look trailer following a celebrated world premiere at the Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase during the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where the film received the Screening Committee’s Award. The film stars Tiffany Black, Terri J. Vaughn, Gregory Alan Williams, Terry Henry, Shay Mack, De’Etta West, and London Harper.

Audiences at Cannes praised the film as “beautifully shot,” “deeply authentic,” and “a story every family will eventually have to face.”

Written and directed by Smith and produced by Gold D. Morgan and Errol Sadler, p.g.a., The Heir explores the emotional fallout of generational legacy, grief, and one of the most difficult questions families face after loss: what happens to the family home? Set against a backdrop of gentrification and rapidly shifting communities, the film examines how unresolved emotions, financial pressures, and unspoken history collide when loved ones are forced to make decisions about inheritance and property.

“For me, this film was never just about a house,” Smith said. “It’s about memory, legacy, communication, and what happens when families avoid difficult conversations until it’s too late. This story is deeply personal to me because I lived it — on both sides of my family.”

Best known for producing more than 4,500 hours of television and film across BET, TV One, VH1, Lifetime, MTV, and Hallmark, Smith’s move into directing marks a significant new chapter in her career.

Following its Cannes launch, The Heir is embarking on a strong festival run with selections including the LightReel Film Festival, Nepal America Film Festival, Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Oscar qualifying), Urban 360 Film Festival, and Hip Hop Film Festival, with additional announcements expected in the coming months.

The film is executive produced by ALee Holding Company, TeamGreene, and Gale A. Smith, and produced under HeirBloom Entertainment in association with Passline Productions and TYCOR International.
