Tubi has officially acquired worldwide rights to The Other, Gold, the indie dramedy that made waves during its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival. The film, which explores themes of grief, isolation, and rekindled friendship, was released on the platform during Mental Health Awareness Month—making it Emmy-eligible as a television movie just days before the Academy’s submission deadline.
Created by and starring rising multihyphenate Sharaé Nikai, The Other, Gold follows Farrah Henry, a television writer navigating personal loss and an unexpected reconnection in LA’s Little Tokyo.
The ensemble cast includes Amin Joseph (Snowfall, The Greatest) and Krista Marie Yu (Reboot, Dr. Ken)
Nikai also co-directed the film alongside David Lassiter, and co-wrote and produced the project—with intimate cinematography by Ray Wongchinda (America Is Burning). Motion design was crafted by Kahdija Murray alongside Nikai and Lassiter.
“This film arrives at Tubi at a time when audiences are ready to reflect on the deeper impact of the pandemic,” Nikai shared. “Tribeca recognized that early by inviting us to speak on grief panels and the chaos of directing during world insanity.”
Championed by Tribeca Festival programmers—including director Cara Cusumano and programmers Faridah Gbadamosi and Casey Baron—the film was one of only 10 selected for the U.S. Narrative Competition from over 13,000 submissions. “Sharaé proves a force on the page, behind the camera, and on screen,” Baron wrote on Tribeca’s website.
Now positioned as an Emmy contender, The Other, Gold is under consideration in five categories: Outstanding Television Movie, Directing, Lead Actress, Cinematography, and Motion Design. This follows prior attention from the Spirit Awards and Academy Awards, where the film was submitted for Best Director, Screenplay, Picture, Lead Actress, and Breakout Performance.
“After an exceptional year—one where top institutions are finally recognizing true independent filmmaking—we’re proud to partner with Tubi, a platform that continues to expand its global reach and support bold storytelling,” Lassiter added.
The Other, Gold is now streaming on Tubi.
