Vertical Entertainment has secured the North American, UK, and Ireland distribution rights for the indie drama “The Listener,” directed by Steve Buscemi and featuring Tessa Thompson. The film, which premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and had its North American debut at Tribeca, is set for a day-and-date release on March 29.
Penned by Alessandro Camon, known for “The Messenger,” the narrative revolves around Beth (Thompson), a helpline worker immersed in the nightly task of fielding calls from individuals grappling with loneliness, brokenness, and despair. The film delves into the increasing challenges faced by Beth during her shifts, raising questions about whether she will lose or save someone. As the plot unfolds, Beth’s own story is unveiled, shedding light on her motivation to engage in this emotionally demanding work.

The cast includes notable voices such as Rebecca Hall, Logan Marshall-Green, Margaret Cho, Alia Shawkat, Derek Cecil, Ricky Velez, Casey Wilson, Jamie Hector, Blu Del Barrio, and Bobby Soto. The production team comprises Wren Arthur, Steve Buscemi, Oren Moverman, Lauren Hantz, and Tessa Thompson as producers, with John Hantz, Julia Lebedev, Eddie Vaisman, and Suzanne Warren serving as executive producers. Co-producers for the film are Billy Mulligan and Kat Barnette.
Steve Buscemi expressed his admiration for Alessandro Camon’s screenplay, highlighting the resonance he felt with the lead character, Beth, and praising Tessa Thompson’s compelling performance. He emphasized the film’s exploration of the heroic nature of the exchange between caller and listener, describing it as an “exquisite” journey.
Vertical Entertainment, represented by Peter Jarowey and SVP of Acquisitions Piantedosi, negotiated the deal, while Hantz Motion Pictures and CAA Media Finance represented the production.
