‘Will Trent’ Shocker: Sonja Sohn Exits as ABC Confirms Amanda Wagner’s Death

I’m not even going to pretend this one didn’t sit with me for a few days.

After the jaw-dropping ending of Will Trent Season 4, Episode 15, ABC has officially confirmed what a lot of us were hoping wasn’t true: Amanda Wagner is dead. The GBI Deputy Director, played by Sonja Sohn, was killed after being stabbed multiple times while tracking a dangerous lead tied to the elusive “Commander.”

The confirmation comes as the Ramón Rodríguez-led procedural heads into its final stretch of the season—and just like that, one of its most important characters is gone.

A Cliffhanger That Hits Different

Titled “The Blank Expanse of Nothing,” the episode ends with Will discovering Amanda’s body in the street—an image that felt especially brutal for a show that doesn’t usually take out its core characters like that.

And maybe that’s why it hit so hard.

Because if you’ve been watching Will Trent from the beginning, Amanda isn’t just “the boss.” She’s been the constant. The one person who always knew how to handle Will—when to push him, when to protect him, and when to call him out.

So while the show has played with danger before, this is the first time it’s followed through in a way that permanently changes everything.

A Defining Loss for the Series

Amanda’s death marks the first major main character exit in the show—and it’s not a small one.

Behind the scenes, Sohn’s departure confirms this isn’t a fake-out. On-screen, the ripple effect is immediate:

  • The GBI loses its steady, respected leader
  • Will loses his emotional anchor
  • The Adelaide storyline just became deeply personal

As co-showrunner Karine Rosenthal told Variety, the decision serves as a “reset” for the series, opening the door for a completely new dynamic within the GBI.

And honestly, you can already feel that shift.

What This Means for Will

If you know Will Trent, you know this isn’t something he’s just going to process and move on from.

Amanda has been in his life since he was a child—more than a mentor, more than a boss. She was family. With everything Will has already been dealing with this season—his past, his relationships, and the lingering presence of James Ulster—this loss feels like the kind that could push him somewhere darker.

And based on what we’ve seen so far, that unraveling may already be starting.

A Rare Swing That Changes the Game

Network procedurals don’t usually take risks like this—especially not when the formula is working. But Will Trent just made it clear it’s willing to shake things up in a major way.

Whether that shift pays off long-term remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: there is no version of this show moving forward that doesn’t feel Amanda’s absence.

And honestly? That’s going to take some getting used to.
