10 Years Later: Tracking Progress Before and After #OscarsSoWhite

For decades, the Academy Awards have been seen as the pinnacle of recognition in film, yet Black talent was often overlooked. This frustration came to a head in 2015 when April Reign tweeted #OscarsSoWhite and that viral tweet started a movement, which called out the lack of diversity among nominees. At the time, the numbers were stark considering the Oscars have been around since 1929:

  • Total Nominees Before #OscarsSoWhite: 146
  • Total Winners Before #OscarsSoWhite: 33

Since then, the movement has led to industry-wide conversations and some changes. An additional 101 Black nominees have been recognized, bringing the total nominations to 243. However, key categories like Best Director and Best Actress remain under-recognized, highlighting that progress is ongoing:

  • Total Nominees After #OscarsSoWhite: 105 additional nominees
  • Total Winners After #OscarsSoWhite: 26 additional winners

While there has been notable improvement, the Academy must continue striving for greater inclusivity across all forms of diversity. Below, we break down the progress made before and after the movement, celebrating the achievements of Black creatives across major Oscar categories.
