Looks like we’re headed back to Glen Oak—well, sort of. Variety reports that CBS Studios is cooking up a fresh reboot of the 90s family drama 7th Heaven, with a new, diverse family at its core. And while the project is still in the early development stages, some heavy hitters are already attached.

Anthony Sparks, best known for his work on Queen Sugar and Bel-Air, will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Jessica Biel, who starred in the original series as Mary Camden, is also on board as executive producer through her Iron Ocean banner, alongside Michelle Purple. DeVon Franklin joins as executive producer via his Franklin Entertainment banner, under an overall deal with CBS Studios.

Sources say the reboot will center on a “diverse family,” signaling a shift from the original Camden family’s story, and no original cast members are expected to return. While a network or streamer hasn’t been named yet, the project is steadily moving forward in development.

Created by Brenda Hampton, the original 7th Heaven ran for 11 seasons from 1996 to 2007, making it one of the longest-running family dramas on American television. Set in the fictional town of Glen Oak, CA, it followed the lives of the Camden family—led by Protestant minister Eric Camden (Stephen Collins) and his wife Annie (Catherine Hicks)—and their seven children.

The show was a staple of late-’90s and early-2000s television, but its legacy has been complicated by Collins’ 2014 admission of sexual misconduct involving minors. In 2024, Beverley Mitchell, David Gallagher, and Mackenzie Rosman launched the Catching Up with the Camdens rewatch podcast, where they addressed the controversy, stating, “All forms of abuse, sexual abuse of any kind, it’s inexcusable. And victims of abuse need to be shown compassion and they should be given support.”

This new chapter for 7th Heaven could be a chance to reimagine the series for a new generation, one that better reflects the world we live in today.
