⚠️ Heads up—major spoiler ahead for the April 17 episode of 9-1-1. Read on only if you’re caught up or ready for the emotional blow.
After eight seasons of heart-stopping rescues, emotional arcs, and rock-solid leadership, 9-1-1 just delivered one of its most devastating twists yet. An original cast member has officially exited the series, and the way it all went down? Whew. It’s the kind of moment that stays with you.
In the second half of the two-part “Contagion” storyline, titled “Lab Rats,” the series said goodbye to Captain Bobby Nash, who died after being exposed to a deadly virus. True to form, Bobby went out a hero—risking (and ultimately giving) his life to save his team.

The episode follows Bobby, Chimney, Hen, and Ravi trapped inside an underground lab after responding to a fire. Once inside, the team realizes they’ve been exposed to a modified virus, and things spiral fast. Chimney gets infected, Hen suffers a collapsed lung, Ravi runs out of oxygen—and Bobby steps up to keep them all alive, one emergency at a time.
But what no one knew (except Bobby)? His air supply had also been compromised. And when Buck and Athena finally locate the only vial of the antidote, Bobby makes the call to give it to Chimney, choosing to quietly sacrifice himself. It’s the kind of selfless decision that defines who Bobby has been since day one—fighting for everyone else, even when he had nothing left to give.
As the team is rescued and begins recovering, Bobby breaks the news: he’s already infected, and the antidote’s been used. His final moments are spent in prayer, with one last emotional goodbye to Athena through a glass door. “If I could choose, I would stay with you. Always,” he tells her—before quietly passing away as Hozier’s “Work Song” plays in the background.
Following the episode, ABC released a teaser for the upcoming May 1 episode (their giving us time of bereavement so no new episodes airing on April 24th), “The Last Alarm,” and it’s as heavy as you’d expect. The trailer shows Bobby’s funeral and the emotional fallout that follows. Athena is devastated, Buck is spiraling, Chimney’s wracked with guilt, and Eddie returns to Los Angeles to honor his former captain.
“When a hero falls, can his world move on?” the narrator asks in the teaser. And that seems to be the question Season 8 is now determined to answer.
In a heartfelt letter to fans, Peter Krause confirmed his exit and reflected on the full-circle arc of his character. “Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this,” he shared. “First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them.”
9-1-1 showrunner Tim Minear emphasized that the decision to kill off Bobby was “entirely creative” and not actor-driven. “I had to convince everybody about this,” he told Variety, noting the next few episodes will fully explore the aftermath. “Every single episode of the next three, they’re all about Bobby’s death.”
And while fans are still processing the loss, the series isn’t slowing down. Season 9 is officially happening, and the 9-1-1 universe is expanding with the upcoming spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville, executive produced by Angela Bassett, who remains a lead and EP on the main series as well.
So what does the firehouse look like without Bobby Nash? That’s the question 9-1-1 is about to unpack—one emotional episode at a time.
“The Last Alarm” airs May 1 on ABC at 8/7c.
Episodes stream next day on Hulu.
