Netflix is ready to up the stakes.
On May 15, the streamer will premiere BET, a live-action series based on Kakegurui — Homura Kawamoto’s manga that built a massive following with its intense, over-the-top story about gambling, status, and survival at an elite academy.
Since first hitting shelves in 2014, Kakegurui (Compulsive Gambler in English) has grown into a full-blown franchise, with two anime seasons from Studio MAPPA, a live-action Japanese series, spin-off manga, and two feature films. Now, Netflix is bringing a new English-language version to global audiences.
About the Series:
Developed for television by Warrior Nun creator Simon Barry, BET sticks close to the original premise: a new transfer student shakes up a school where everything — including your freedom — is won and lost through high-stakes gambling.
Miku Martineau stars as Yumeko, a mysterious newcomer whose compulsive gambling tendencies disrupt the school’s rigid social hierarchy. The student council, which rules over the academy’s highest-ranking gamblers, quickly takes notice — setting off a new wave of competition, risk, and strategy.
The ensemble cast also includes Ayo Solanke (Clown in a Cornfield), Eve Edwards (The Good Doctor), Clara Alexandrova (Alert: Missing Persons Unit), Hunter Cardinal (Scout), Anwen O’Driscoll (You Can Live Forever), Aviva Mongillo (Workin’ Moms), and Ryan Sutherland (Nick Shorts).
Simon Barry serves as both director and executive producer, joined by Jeff F. King, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Jon Rutherford, and Nick Nantell.
BET will launch with 10 episodes, each running 30 minutes, all set to release at once on May 15.
Background on the Manga:
Kakegurui originally debuted in Monthly Gangan Joker magazine and quickly built a reputation for its exaggerated character expressions, unpredictable storytelling, and high-tension gambling matches. Set at Hyakkaou Private Academy, the story centers around students wagering money, status, and even personal freedom to climb the academy’s strict social ladder.
The franchise’s reach expanded globally through the anime adaptation, which first aired in 2017, and a Japanese live-action series that premiered in 2018 — both available on Netflix.
Netflix’s Expanding Live-Action Slate:
BET joins a growing list of Netflix live-action adaptations of manga and anime properties. Recent years have seen titles like One Piece, Alice in Borderland, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead make the jump to new formats, with Netflix continuing to invest in bringing anime and manga stories to broader audiences.
