‘Wisteria Lane’: Kerry Washington to Produce ‘Desperate Housewives’ Reimagining for Onyx Collective

More than two decades after Desperate Housewives made Wisteria Lane a household name, the iconic cul-de-sac is getting a bold new reboot. Onyx Collective is developing a fresh reimagining of the hit ABC mystery dramedy, with Kerry Washington’s Simpson Street leading the charge behind the scenes.

The new series, also titled Wisteria Lane, is being developed by Washington’s Simpson Street banner and 20th Television. Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant, Queen of the South) is writing and executive producing, bringing a fresh take to the darkly comedic, drama-filled world that turned suburban scandal into must-see TV. The series will center on five very different women—friends, enemies, and everything in between—who live in the kind of cul-de-sac that looks perfect on the outside. But behind the manicured lawns and curated social feeds, the neighbors are hiding more than just their recycling bins.

Kerry Washington and Simpson Street’s Pilar Savone will EP alongside Chaidez and Stacey Sher (Into the Badlands) under her Shiny Penny banner. While there’s no confirmation yet if Washington herself will appear on screen, her creative fingerprints are all over the project. The series was pitched to both Onyx and Hulu Originals, which makes sense given Simpson Street’s strong track record with both entities. They’re behind Onyx’s buzzy legal drama Reasonable Doubt, now heading into its third season, as well as the dramedy UnPrisoned, and the Emmy-nominated Hulu limited series Little Fires Everywhere.

This Wisteria Lane reboot comes at a time when legacy shows are getting fresh chapters. Hulu has Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Prison Break reboots in the works, while 20th TV also has a Malcolm in the Middle sequel and potential Scrubs revival brewing. But Wisteria Lane hits a little different. It doesn’t just revisit a show—it revisits a place that, quite literally, helped define a genre.

The original Desperate Housewives ran from 2004 to 2012 and starred Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, and Nicollette Sheridan. The story followed a group of women navigating secrets, betrayals, and mysteries in their idyllic neighborhood, all narrated by their deceased friend Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong). It racked up seven Emmys and turned the Universal Studios backlot’s Colonial Street into a full-on character of its own. That outdoor set—still intact—remains one of the most popular stops on the Universal Studios Tour.

With this new chapter, Washington and Chaidez have the opportunity to update the block for a new era while honoring its dramatic roots. And if you’re wondering whether any of the OG cast is making a return? Don’t hold your breath. While Eva Longoria recently said she’d “be the first to sign up” for a revival, there are no confirmed plans for legacy characters to appear.

Chaidez brings her own sharp pen and genre-bending sensibilities to the series. Her past work spans Hunters, 12 Monkeys, Heroes, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Most recently, she served as co-showrunner on The Flight Attendant Season 2—another series that blends mystery with mess.

Simpson Street, meanwhile, is keeping its momentum going. Next up: Imperfect Women at Apple TV+, starring Washington, Elisabeth Moss, and Kate Mara, and the action-thriller Shadow Force for Lionsgate with Washington and Omar Sy.

So yes—Wisteria Lane is back. And it’s got a new set of secrets, a new generation of neighbors, and a new powerhouse team ready to stir the pot.
