‘Clueless’ Sequel Series in the Works at Peacock With Original Star Set to Reprise Their Role

The ‘Clueless’ universe is officially expanding—and yes, one of its most iconic faces is making a comeback.

Peacock is developing a sequel series to the 1995 cult classic Clueless, with Alicia Silverstone set to reprise her role as Cher Horowitz—the fashion-forward, endlessly quotable queen bee of Bronson Alcott High. Not only is Silverstone returning on screen, but she’ll also executive produce the new series, bringing her full-circle into the story that made her a household name.

The project comes from CBS Studios in association with Universal Television, and it marks the streamer’s second attempt at reviving the beloved IP. Back in 2019, a Dionne-focused reboot was in the works but never made it to series. This time around, the creative team behind the Gossip Girl empire—Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage—are leading the charge, writing and executive producing under their Fake Empire banner. Original film writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence are also signed on as executive producers.

While plot details are still under wraps, this new Clueless will pick up with Cher in a later chapter of her life—though it’s safe to assume she’s still living her best coordinated and curated existence.

Silverstone’s return is a full-circle moment for fans who’ve long hoped to see her revisit the role. Her 2023 Super Bowl ad, where she slipped back into Cher’s iconic yellow plaid for a tongue-in-cheek appearance, reignited buzz about a possible continuation—and clearly, the interest never faded.

It’s worth noting: CBS Studios, which owns the TV rights to Clueless, has been holding onto the franchise with care. The original film, which co-starred Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and Paul Rudd, was a reimagining of Jane Austen’s Emma and became a defining teen comedy of the 90s. It was also turned into a half-hour comedy in 1996, which ran for three seasons across ABC and UPN—with a new actress in the role of Cher, since Silverstone wasn’t available at the time.

This time, the OG is in the building.

Schwartz and Savage, the team behind The O.C., Gossip Girl, and City on Fire, bring their sharp, stylish sensibilities to the table—making them a fitting choice to modernize the world of Cher without losing what made her so iconic in the first place.

No release date yet, but with a powerhouse creative team and Silverstone at the center, the revival is shaping up to be anything but a retread. It’s giving legacy, not leftovers.
