First Look: Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, and More Star in Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Caught Stealing’

Sony Pictures has dropped the first official images from Caught Stealing via Variety, Darren Aronofsky’s gritty crime thriller set in the wild heart of late-’90s New York.

Led by Austin Butler, the film also stars Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Bad Bunny, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Matt Smith — all caught in a dangerous web of mistaken identity, stolen money, and survival. The first-look photos reveal a frantic odyssey through a city still raw, chaotic, and unforgiving.

Butler plays Hank Thompson, a washed-up former baseball star whose life has shrunk to tending bar in a rundown East Village dive. His attempt to stay out of trouble backfires when he’s mistaken for his punk rock neighbor Russ, played by Matt Smith, who may be tied to $4 million in missing mob cash. One image shows Hank and Russ side by side, with Hank unknowingly stepping straight into a violent underworld.

Zoë Kravitz’s Yvonne brings some light to Hank’s dark spiral — the first-look images show their connection, highlighting a relationship full of strength, care, and resilience amid the madness. Meanwhile, Regina King’s character, an organized crime detective, appears in a tense exchange with Hank, signaling that his problems run much deeper than he realizes.

The supporting cast makes their presence known early. Liev Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio appear as Orthodox Jewish brothers whose polished exterior masks their brutal tactics. Bad Bunny steps into the criminal underworld too, playing a ruthless enforcer from the Puerto Rican mob, caught on camera lurking with quiet menace.

Set in 1998, Caught Stealing uses a vibrant, grimy New York as a character in itself — a city where secrets can still hide in alleyways and deals are made in the shadows. The visuals capture a kinetic energy, mixing neon-lit nights, claustrophobic apartments, and gritty street corners that evoke a time before cell phones and surveillance tightened the city’s grip.

Aronofsky, known for pushing his characters — and audiences — into intense, visceral experiences, leans fully into the genre with this crime caper. Every frame from the first-look teases a ride full of strange encounters, brutal fights, and desperate choices as Hank tries to stay alive in a city that doesn’t care if he makes it.

Caught Stealing hits theaters nationwide on August 29, 2025.
