Idris Elba to Direct and Star in Survival Thriller ‘Above the Below’

Idris Elba is set to take on a leading role in the survival thriller ‘Above the Below,’ a project that has now garnered the attention of Lionsgate, acquiring its worldwide rights. Elba, who initially joined the project as a director, will now star in the film alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The production, which commenced filming at Pinewood Studios, will feature scenes shot on the studio’s underwater stage.

‘Above the Below’ follows the story of a trio of astronauts facing the aftermath of a turbulent re-entry to Earth. Cut off from the world and veering off course, they find themselves sinking into the depths of the ocean, initiating a gripping battle for survival. Elba portrays Jackson, the mission commander, while FitzGerald takes on the role of Brooks, the determined co-pilot, and Fiennes Tiffin stars as Rhodes, an optimistic astronaut embarking on his maiden voyage.

The screenplay, originating from an idea by Martin Owen and developed by Future Artists Entertainment, was crafted by Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent.

Idris Elba, known for his roles in various blockbuster hits such as “Luther” and “The Suicide Squad,” has previously directed “Yardie.” Caitlin FitzGerald’s credits include “Masters of Sex” and “Succession,” while Hero Fiennes Tiffin gained recognition for his performance in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”

Future Artists Entertainment CEO Matt Williams expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing the film’s ambitious scope and the talent involved. Production will be overseen by producers Matt Williams and Gina Carter, with Pascal Degove serving as executive producer.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Helen Lee Kim highlighted the opportunity to deliver an exhilarating cinematic experience with a stellar cast and creative team. The project adds to Lionsgate’s slate for 2024, promising an intense journey of survival.
