Met Gala 2026: The Best, The Underwhelming, and The Most On-Theme Looks of the Night

Fashion’s biggest night delivered on every promise — and then some.

On Monday, May 4, the Met Gala 2026 took over the Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, welcoming around 450 guests across fashion, entertainment, politics, technology, and sports for the world’s most glamorous fundraiser. This year’s theme — Fashion Is Art — tied into the Costume Institute’s new exhibition “Costume Art,” exploring the relationship between clothing and the body.

Co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Beyoncé — making her first Met appearance since 2016 — the night drew some of the most talked-about looks in recent memory, with designers including Thom Browne, Gucci’s Demna, and Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello dressing the evening’s biggest names.

It would be remiss not to acknowledge the complicated backdrop. With honorary chairs Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos drawing protests outside the Fifth Avenue steps, celebrating fashion’s excess felt, to put it plainly, a little tone deaf. And yet — here we are. The looks were stunning, the energy was electric, and fashion, as it always does, found a way to make itself the story.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky

Rihanna made her Met Gala return and did not come to play. The gold encrusted gown with its dramatic sculptural swirling halo was genuinely otherworldly, the kind of look that stops the carpet cold. The intricate headpiece and henna detailing added layers of cultural artistry that made the whole thing feel deeply considered. On theme and then some. A$AP complemented in a pink robe coat with feather corsage — softer than expected but it worked alongside her. As a couple they delivered. Rihanna specifically reminded everyone why her Met appearances are events in themselves.

Beyoncé

Ten years away from the Met Gala and she reminded everyone exactly why her absence was felt. The crystal skeleton gown mapping the human body in diamonds, paired with that feathered cape and sculptural crown, was one of the most conceptually rich looks of the entire night. The body literally rendered as art, structure and anatomy reimagined in crystal. As a co-chair she set the bar and then cleared it herself. The fact that she brought Blue Ivy, equally poised in her own white look, made it a full moment. Welcome back.

Ciara and Russell Wilson

As a couple they coordinated beautifully. Ciara’s crystal encrusted gown with the gold collar, spiked crown and architectural shoulder construction was genuinely striking and on theme. Russell’s ivory suit with the gold epaulettes complemented without competing. Together they were one of the stronger coordinated moments of the night.

Doechii

The deep plum draped fabric, the towering sculptural headpiece, the tattooed boots, the stacked jewelry — it was maximalist, provocative, and completely intentional. Whether you loved it or not, it had a clear point of view and fully engaged with the idea of the body as art.

Coco Jones

The smoky charcoal tulle mermaid gown was moody and beautifully constructed, but the theme connection wasn’t really there. It was a gorgeous dress that let her presence do the talking rather than making an artistic argument.

Jaafar Jackson

The gold trimmed black velvet blazer and classic black tie was a quiet but considered nod to his uncle Michael Jackson’s past look — sharp, elegant, and rooted in a very specific kind of showbusiness glamour. For someone carrying that legacy onto one of fashion’s biggest stages, the look felt personal even if it didn’t push the theme forward. Sometimes the reference is the statement.

Naomi Osaka

She came with two looks and both delivered. The white sculptural coat with its dramatic wide brim hat and cascading red petal details was genuinely artistic and on theme. The second look, a deep red encrusted gown with matching gloves, was equally considered. A strong double showing from someone who continues to take the carpet seriously.

Yseult

The oversized black hat casting a dramatic shadow over her face combined with that gold cutout bodice was genuinely arresting. Theatrical, surrealist, and more on theme than it might seem at first glance. The body as canvas, obscured and revealed at once.

Anok Yai

The dramatic black sculptural gown with its oversized hooded collar was striking and deeply architectural. The construction itself felt like a fashion object more than just a dress, which put it firmly in theme territory.

Tyla

The crystal encrusted sheer bodice dissolving into that vivid blue satin skirt was breathtaking, especially from the back. Ornate, detailed and clearly considered. A strong carpet moment.

Keke Palmer

All red everything, the tulle mini with the dramatic train and matching hair, was bold and cohesive but the theme connection wasn’t really there. A great fashion moment that didn’t quite engage with the brief.

Serena Williams

The crumpled silver metallic look had an sculptural, almost molten quality to it, like liquid metal caught mid-movement. The gold leaf sandals wrapping up the leg added to the art object feeling. A stronger theme connection than it might first appear.

SZA

One of the most joyful and maximalist looks of the night. The golden yellow ballgown with its painted butterfly wings and elaborate floral crown felt like a living botanical illustration. Fully committed and genuinely on theme.

Chase Infiniti

One of the clearest interpretations of the night. Her gown was essentially a wearable painting, bold figures rendered in sequins and beads. Fashion as art, not just fashion inspired by it.

Angel Reese

The voluminous pink taffeta gown with those sculptural puff sleeves was romantic and visually impressive. More classic red carpet than conceptual, but she wore it with complete conviction.

Katy Perry

The clean white off shoulder gown paired with that mirrored silver visor helmet was one of the more unexpected combinations of the night. The contrast between the classical silhouette and the futuristic headpiece created a genuine tension that felt intentional and on theme.

Gabrielle Union

Stunning and statuesque but the theme didn’t really register here. The bronze crystal gown and sculptural halo headpiece created a powerful image, but it read more as a strong fashion choice than an artistic one.

Misty Copeland

Clean, minimal, and quietly confident. The leather crop top with the chocolate tulle skirt was beautiful but didn’t engage with the theme in any meaningful way. For someone whose entire life is art in motion, this felt like a missed opportunity.

Doja Cat

The nude latex draped gown was sleek and body conscious but the theme connection was thin. More provocative than conceptual.

Janelle Monae

One of the most genuinely conceptual looks of the entire night. Cables, moss, circuit boards and butterflies woven together into a single sculptural form that felt like it was asking real questions about nature, technology and the human body. Fully on theme and then some. This was fashion as installation art.

Heidi Klum

She took the theme more literally than anyone on the carpet. A living sculpture, fully transformed from head to toe. No question she understood the assignment.

Sabrina Carpenter

The gown constructed from what appeared to be actual film strips was one of the more clever conceptual moves of the night, fashion as a medium for storytelling, quite literally wrapped around the body. The jeweled headpiece tied it into old Hollywood portraiture. Thoughtful and on theme.

Colman Domingo

The bold harlequin patchwork pattern across that tunic was a direct nod to art history, geometric color blocking that felt both painterly and performative. One of the stronger menswear moments of the night in terms of actually engaging with the theme.

Lady Gaga

She treated the carpet like a stage and the look like a sculpture. The iridescent feathered gown, gold armored waist, and towering feathered headdress combined into something that felt less like clothing and more like a living art installation. One of the clearest and most committed interpretations of the night.

Anne Hathaway

The black ballgown with its bold illustrated motifs — a dove in flight, hands releasing it, folk art borders — read like a painting you could wear. Graphic, symbolic, and deeply intentional. The imagery carried real meaning beyond decoration, which is exactly what this theme called for. Absolutely add her to the carousel.

Karan Johar

One of the most on-theme moments of the entire night. That cape was a literal tapestry, dense with Mughal-inspired figures, gold embroidery, and narrative detail. He wore a painting. Full stop.

Angela Bassett

Stunning presence as always, but this felt more like classic red carpet glamour than a theme response. The hot pink fringe gown was joyful and gorgeous, though the “Fashion Is Art” brief didn’t appear to be the driving force behind it.

Law Roach

The white suit with painterly landscape brushstrokes across the lapels was one of the more understated and considered responses to the theme. He let the art speak quietly, which honestly said more than a lot of the louder looks on the carpet.

Zuri Hall

The romantic, painterly quality of the lace and corset construction did feel rooted in something art historical. Not the loudest interpretation but a considered one.

Emma Chamberlain

The gown itself was an undeniable work of art, paint-stroke construction bleeding from yellow into deep indigo. Hard to argue she wasn’t one of the most on-theme of the evening.

Naomi Elize

Actually one of the more interesting responses to the theme. The deconstructed pairing felt like it was asking a question about fashion and process, which is very much in the spirit of the exhibition.

Nichapat Suphap

Fully committed to the theme. The surrealist sculptural hands made this a genuine fashion art object, not just a look. One of the more conceptually complete moments of the night.

Sam Smith

Theatrical and visually striking, but it read more as maximalist fashion than a direct engagement with the theme. Stunning regardless, just not necessarily a conversation with art.

Venus Williams

The sculptural collar elevated this beyond a great gown into something with a real artistic point of view. As a co-chair she delivered, though it leaned more classic glamour than conceptual.

Kela Walker

A beautiful gown but the theme connection felt more incidental than intentional. The craftsmanship was undeniable, it just didn’t feel like it was in conversation with art so much as it was simply a very good dress.

Sheinelle Jones

Gorgeous and polished, but this was red carpet dressing more than theme dressing. The “Fashion Is Art” brief didn’t feel like the driving force behind the look.

Patrick Schwarzenegger

The cropped leather jacket, wide trousers, cane and gloves created a very specific character, almost like a figure stepped out of a noir painting. Whether fully intentional or not, there was an artistic point of view here that worked.

Damson Idris

Cool and confident but the theme didn’t really show up here. The oversized leather coat with red cuffs was a strong fashion statement, just not one that felt in dialogue with Fashion Is Art. More street than gallery.

Georgina Rodríguez

The powder blue corset gown with the floral lace veil was ethereal and bridal, pulled straight from the visual language of classical portraiture. Whether intentional or not, it landed squarely within the theme.

Jisoo

The floral three-dimensional appliqués blooming out of that pink and silver sequined gown felt like a painting coming off the wall. Delicate but deliberate, and very much in conversation with the theme.

Ephraim Sykes

The ivory embroidered cape over a cream suit was romantic and textural but the theme link felt more aesthetic than conceptual. Beautiful tailoring, though the artistic intention wasn’t quite as legible as some others.

Kylie Jenner

The nude structured bodice dissolving into that voluminous embroidered skirt was visually striking and the craftsmanship was undeniable. But the theme connection felt more decorative than intentional. A beautiful look that didn’t quite make an artistic argument.

Cai Xukun

The red sequin fringe cascading down one side like dripping paint against stark black was a genuinely interesting take. It felt like a canvas mid-stroke, intentional and dynamic. A strong theme moment from a men’s fashion perspective.

Kendall Jenner The draped ivory Greco-Roman gown was gorgeous and referenced classical sculpture in its construction. Not the loudest look on the carpet but there was an art historical argument being made quietly here.

Joshua Henry

The red double breasted suit with jeweled lapels and embellished trouser stripe was sharp and confident but didn’t make a strong case for the theme. A great suit at the wrong event for just a great suit.

Kim Kardashian

The molded copper latex bodysuit with its visible body contours was genuinely provocative in an artistic sense, the body as sculpture, as object. It divided people but as a theme response it actually had a point of view.
