Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society Adapting Christopher Golden’s Horror Novel ‘The House of Last Resort’

Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society is headed into haunted house territory.

The production company has officially optioned The House of Last Resort, the chilling, high-concept horror novel by New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden. And here’s the twist—Golden isn’t just handing over the rights and stepping back. He’s writing the screenplay himself, bringing his eerie vision from page to screen.

The book, released in January by St. Martin’s Press, follows a young American couple who make the bold (and budget-friendly) decision to move to a tiny, picturesque hill town in Sicily. The town’s mayor is offering up abandoned homes for one euro—a trend that’s actually been popping up in real life across Italy. Sounds like a dream, right? But of course, things take a sinister turn. Their new home has secrets—whispers behind the walls, walled-up catacombs, and a dark past that won’t stay buried.

Golden, a Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson Award-winning author, has serious genre cred. His past credits include Hellboy: The Crooked Man, and he’s no stranger to spooky storytelling—whether it’s on screen, the page, or in audio form. He’s also fresh off a win at the Audie Awards for his work in the audio drama space, including Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, which he co-wrote and co-directed with Amber Benson. That one was a hit over on Audible.

Joining Jordan on the producing team is Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society, alongside Golden and Pete Donaldson of Donaldson Media.

This isn’t the only thing Outlier Society has cooking. The company is currently prepping a reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios. Not only will Jordan star alongside Taylor Russell (which, let’s be real, is a pairing worth watching), but he’s also stepping back into the director’s chair. After smashing expectations with Creed III, which pulled in over $276 million globally and set records as the highest-grossing sports film opening domestically, Jordan’s continuing to flex his creative muscles behind the camera.

Outlier’s plate is stacked right now. Upcoming projects include Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 at Paramount Pictures, directed by John Wick’s Chad Stahelski, and several high-profile series, like an adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ fantasy bestseller Fourth Wing and The Greatest, Amazon’s upcoming series on the life of Muhammad Ali.

And let’s not forget Sinners. Jordan will next be seen in Ryan Coogler’s original period horror film, which is eyeing a $40M+ debut over Easter weekend. Between Sinners, The House of Last Resort, and his other upcoming projects, Jordan clearly has one foot in the future—and one in the shadows.
