Scott Mescudi, widely known as Kid Cudi, is the latest addition to the cast of Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2, starring Adam Sandler. Cudi shared the news on Instagram with visible excitement: “I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a minute!!!” he wrote. “This is so f—in HUGE. It’s been a long-time dream of mine to work with Adam, he’s my favorite, and his movies and comedy made up my childhood. Another dream come true. BLESSED!! Get ready, this one’s gonna be EPIC.”
Cudi joins an ensemble that will see Sandler reprising his role as the iconic Happy Gilmore, joined by original stars Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald. NFL star Travis Kelce and music icon Bad Bunny are also on board, each set to make cameo appearances. The returning cast will bring back fan-favorite characters like Bowen’s Virginia Venit, Gilmore’s love interest, and McDonald’s Shooter McGavin, the pro-golfer antagonist.
Happy Gilmore 2 is directed by Kyle Newacheck, who previously collaborated with Sandler on Murder Mystery. Sandler co-wrote the screenplay alongside Tim Herlihy, with longtime collaborators Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds producing. Dennis Dugan, who directed the original film, will be an executive producer, joined by Judit Maull, Kevin Grady, David Bausch, and Barry Bernardi. Plot details and Cudi’s role remain under wraps, with Netflix declining to comment on the story’s specifics.
The original Happy Gilmore, released by Universal and directed by Dugan, has become one of Sandler’s most beloved films. It follows Happy Gilmore, a failed hockey player with a powerful slapshot, who discovers a hidden talent for golf when he enters the PGA Tour to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure. Happy’s unconventional style and short temper make him a polarizing figure on the course, much to the annoyance of PGA officials and smug golfers like Shooter McGavin.
Since its 1996 release, Happy Gilmore has grossed over $82 million worldwide and developed a dedicated following.
As for Cudi, his career has seen a successful crossover into acting, with recent credits including M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap, the A24 horror film X, and a role in Silent Night. He’s also part of Paramount+’s upcoming Knuckles series, a spinoff of Sonic the Hedgehog, and is currently developing the Sony action-comedy Hell Naw.
