Nobody saw this coming. Not even them. Since landing on Netflix on June 12, The Polygamist has quietly become one of the streamer’s most explosive global hits, reaching No. 2 worldwide and No. 1 in 16 countries, with top 10 placement in 63 countries including the United States. Based on Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s novel, the South African series follows Joyce Gomora, a social media darling whose carefully constructed perfect family front unravels when her husband’s betrayal pushes her to do the unthinkable. We caught up with the two actors at the center of it all, Sdumo Mtshali, who plays the calculating and magnetic Jonasi, and Gugu Gumede, who plays Joyce, to break down the show’s cultural earthquake, the real difference between polygamy and manipulation, and why the children might be the most important characters in the whole thing.
