Apple TV+ just dropped the trailer for Smoke, its upcoming crime drama starring and executive produced by Taron Egerton. Reuniting the creative team behind Apple’s critically acclaimed Black Bird, the series is set to premiere globally on June 27, 2025, with the first two episodes dropping at once and new episodes arriving every Friday through August 15.
Created and written by Dennis Lehane, Smoke is inspired by real events and follows arson investigator Dave Gudsen (Egerton) and police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) as they race to stop a pair of serial arsonists. As their investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the fires are only part of a much bigger—and much more dangerous—game.
The cast is stacked with talent, including Rafe Spall, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Hannah Emily Anderson, Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky, Adina Porter, Oscar and Emmy nominee Greg Kinnear, and Emmy winner John Leguizamo. Thom Yorke’s haunting theme song for the series is already out on Apple Music and other streaming platforms.
Smoke is a true ensemble piece with Lehane not only creating and writing but also executive producing alongside Egerton, Richard Plepler for EDEN Productions, and Bradley Thomas and Dan Friedkin for Imperative Entertainment. Kari Skogland, Joe Chappelle, and Jane Bartelme also serve as executive producers, with Skogland, Chappelle, and Jim McKay stepping in to direct episodes.
The project is based in part on truth.media’s gripping Firebug podcast, hosted by Oscar and Emmy winner Kary Antholis, who joins as an executive producer. Marc Smerling of Truth Podcasting Corp also brings his storytelling chops as an executive producer.
Produced by Apple Studios, Smoke joins a growing lineup of award-winning original programming on Apple TV+, which has built its name on prestige content like Ted Lasso, Severance, and CODA—the first streaming service film to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
With Egerton and Smollett leading the charge and a story that dives deep into the sinister side of arson and conspiracy, Smoke looks primed to spark serious buzz this summer.
